Bombardier workers in Derby will help more people reach some of the world’s greatest wonders by building rolling stock for a new multi-billion pound Cairo monorail.
The manufacturer was named preferred bidder to build and supply the new system during a visit to Egypt by secretary of state for international trade Liam Fox.
The design and build contract and 30-year operation and maintenance deal are worth roughly £1bn each for Bombardier Transportation.
The monorail will be developed and built in Derby. The contracts will secure the jobs of about 100 staff, reported Derbyshire Live. The news website said the company will invest in a dedicated monorail production line in Litchurch Lane.
The project includes a 54km monorail system connecting the New Administrative City with East Cairo, as well as a 42km line connecting 6th October City with Giza, home of the Great Pyramid and the Sphinx. Bombardier will work in partnership with Egyptian companies Orascom Construction and the Arab Contractors.
The bid is subject to contract and final confirmation.
